Historical and affordable: The paradores of Spain

Category: Favorites | General | HotelsChristine Norris @ 06:53

Spain boasts a large number of paradores: state-run hotels that are more often than not housed in buildings of historical and architectural significance. Before the word "state-run" has you heading for the comfort of the name brands, take a closer look at some of our favorite paradores—you'll find incredible locations, superb dining (with ample options for vegetarian and gluten-free travelers, not to mention the breakfast spread replete with chilled cava) and something just a little more authentic than a stay at the reliable but typical name brand offerings. While some paradores do have steep prices that are on par with bigger hotels, many are incredibly affordable.

To say the Parador de Ronda's setting is breathtaking doesn't quite capture how it really does take one's breath away: Dining alfresco means being right on the edge, looking down onto the gorge from 400 feet up; and most rooms have small balconies, which provide fantastic views, whether looking at the city or over the cliffside. Service and room standards here are especially good for a parador, and the restaurant serves hearty, authentic Spanish fare, but it's the location that makes this place a must-stay. This property is definitely going straight to the top of our "Dreamiest Hotels" list.

Discovering holiday magic in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Category: Destinations | Favorites | On The SceneMegan Leader @ 05:22

At this time of year, it seems that everybody has his/her own traditions that draw on deep connections to family, home and heritage. I love the holidays because of all the traditions that coexist so beautifully. Twinkling lights, food and family seem to come to the forefront. Your warmest holiday memories may tie to a candlelight service at your church, a great meal cooked by your grandmother, or cocktails and sequins with some of your best friends. The holidays always remind me of why I love to travel: Everyone has a unique story.

When I needed a dose of holiday joy this year, I turned to my current hometown, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and it surprised me with its cozy, comforting, delightful magic. From stunning architecture dotted with winter greenery to Christmas carols sung by candlelight, this city is full of experiences that will make you feel right at home, no matter where you're from.

A royal experience at Ottawa's Fairmont Chateau Laurier

Category: HotelsMegan Leader @ 06:27

Ottawa's grande dame, and an iconic fixture in this city's skyline, is the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. It regularly hosts diplomats, politicians and even royalty. (Fun fact: Its opulent architecture and location just across the canal from Parliament Hill means that visitors occasionally mistake it for Parliament!)

For a property with such elegance and history, I wasn't surprised when I encountered a professional staff and great amenities. But what made my stay unforgettable was in the details: Technological innovation, a warm and friendly welcome with lots of laughter, exceptional meals with the freshest ingredients, and true Canadian touches that made me feel right at home in this country's beautiful capital. The Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Ontario, is the Canadian capital's grande dame. A perfect picture of a historical property that stands the test of time, its Scottish baronial architecture is exquisite, and its history is rich and vibrant. I was pleasantly surprised when I visited this property to see that this stately hotel is adapting quickly to new technology, offering interactive mobile features for hotel guests and nonguests alike.
