The historic heartland of French wine country: Dijon

Located in the region of Burgundy—famed for its wine, as well as its boeuf bourguignon, a favorite of this writer's (try it at the Maison Blanche in Paris!)—Dijon is synonymous with mustard, and often serves as a departure point for tours of the area's wineries; but it also boasts a rich history, with many remaining signs of its once powerful position as a ducal seat, along with incredible, predominantly Gothic architecture. Be sure, when in Dijon, to check out a few of these wonders before you begin your daily wine tasting.

travel42 Best Of: Top 10 boutique-hotels around the world

Category: Best Of | HotelsMegan Leader @ 05:57

I have a slight obsession with hotels. And since I'm among travel aficionados here, I know I'm not alone... you're probably familiar with that feeling you get when you stumble across an incredible property that just takes your breath away. It sticks with you. You immediately want to book a client there because you know they'll adore it. And you may be a little depressed because you would give anything just to move in and live there... if only you were independently wealthy!

But I digress. I got that feeling over and over while putting together this list of top 10 boutique hotels around the world. These properties exhibit gorgeous design and personality, and some of these are on my personal bucket list as destinations in themselves.

Florence boutique hotel

1. J.K. Place Firenze, Florence, Italy. Located right on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, this stylish boutique property is less than five minutes from the train station as well as from the Duomo. The top-floor terrace has great views of More...

The best day trip from Nice: Eze, the tiny medieval town that packs a big punch

Nice is a jewel of a city in the south of France, with city-bustle and gorgeous beaches, charming and colorful buildings a-plenty, and definitely the coolest library I’ve ever seen. There’s plenty to see and do there (ride the Ferris wheel if the weather is nice!), but in this traveler’s opinion, the best thing about Nice is its proximity to the tiny medieval town of Eze.

For the most breathtaking views in all of France, you must make the trip to this tiny town, nicknamed “the eagle’s nest” for the 1,400 feet above sea level upon which it rests. Eze is an easy and relatively quick bus ride from Nice.

5 hotels for art lovers

Category: Megan Leader @ 05:56

It's one thing to get your art fix at a museum during your travels, but it's an entirely different thing to wake up each morning surrounded by inspiring works of art.  These five hotels make this possible with impeccably designed interiors that will make you question whether you even need to leave your hotel room at all!

Hotel Le Bellechasse, Paris. I first came across this hotel about two years ago on travel42, and its eccentric beauty has haunted me ever since. Rooms are decorated floor-to-ceiling with larger-than-life art (even the ceilings are covered in elaborate designs)! Motifs evoke nature and include butterflies, the moon and stars, and underwater scenes. While I tend to enjoy the eccentric, travel42's hotel correspondent included a disclaimer about the rooms here: "Like prescription bottles with those familiar labels, these rooms should carry a warning that they should not be mixed with alcohol or drugs of any kind. (Rest assured that there is a 24-hour pharmacy adjacent to the hotel.)"  More...

World Cup stars and their dreamy hometowns

If you're in the market for a summer boyfriend, you might as well find somebody who can take you on a nice end-of-summer trip. And if you don't mind competing with fashion models and pop divas for his attention, you could do worse than dating an international football star. True, he'd be fairly tied up starting June 12 with the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, but come August he'll be in the mood to take you home to meet Mom. Or July, if his team doesn't survive the group matches; you could help him find the upside of defeat. More...

Why a local tour could be the best part of your next trip

Category: Destinations | Recreation | SightseeingMegan Leader @ 11:33

Our destination guides are packed with helpful information for travelers to create thousands of potential itineraries, but one of the most valuable sections of our destination guides can be the "local tours." As you know, travel42 correspondents update our destination guides with trusted, tried-and-true information, but this is especially helpful when it comes to a local tour. (Raise your hand if you've ever been subject to an incredibly boring tour, or one with a less-than-knowledgeable guide! ...My hand's up.)

Some travelers prefer to skip out on classes or tours to see the local sights themselves. I think it depends on your travel style, but for most people, including a locally hosted tour or class into your itinerary can be the best part of your trip. Here are a few examples of local tours I've taken that made all the difference in my vacations. More...

A weekend in Nice, France

Category: DestinationsMegan Leader @ 04:04

Nestled on the seaside along the French Riviera (Cote d'Azur), Nice, France, is perfectly poised for visitors to enjoy some of the world's finest cuisine and cultural attractions. The warm breezes and exquisite offerings of this city make it one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean, especially with the luxurious principality of Monaco just a short train (or limo) ride away. But Nice has plenty to be proud of in its own right. Here are our recommendations for must-see sights for a weekend trip to this beautiful French city.
