But I digress. I got that feeling over and over while putting together this list of top 10 boutique hotels around the world. These properties exhibit gorgeous design and personality, and some of these are on my personal bucket list as destinations in themselves.

Why a local tour could be the best part of your next trip

Category: Destinations | Recreation | SightseeingMegan Leader @ 11:33

Our destination guides are packed with helpful information for travelers to create thousands of potential itineraries, but one of the most valuable sections of our destination guides can be the "local tours." As you know, travel42 correspondents update our destination guides with trusted, tried-and-true information, but this is especially helpful when it comes to a local tour. (Raise your hand if you've ever been subject to an incredibly boring tour, or one with a less-than-knowledgeable guide! ...My hand's up.)

Some travelers prefer to skip out on classes or tours to see the local sights themselves. I think it depends on your travel style, but for most people, including a locally hosted tour or class into your itinerary can be the best part of your trip. Here are a few examples of local tours I've taken that made all the difference in my vacations. More...

Planning a trip to trace your family heritage

I once took a seminar in college that was all about tracing family history. It was easily one of the most valuable experiences of my college career. Hours each week were spent discussing the eras in which our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents lived, as well as the world-changing events that shaped their lives. I scoured genealogical websites, poring through census records and newspaper clippings. It was incredibly rewarding to finish the semester with a scrapbook full of personal interviews and physical mementos of my family history.

The view of the countryside from the town of Roccanova.

So when I moved to Italy for a semester, I decided to take a solo trip to the tiny town my father's distant relatives are from: Roccanova, in the Basilicata region of Italy. I simply went to explore the town and gain some perspective, but I left having met distant family and having made new friends. I would highly recommend that any family interested in tracing their heritage try to plan an international trip of this nature, just to give context to the lives of their ancestors. More...
