Why you should spend a few days in Peru's Sacred Valley

There's no doubt that the Sacred Valley is absolutely stunning. But many travelers to Peru only get the chance to see it from the windows of a train or bus en route from Cusco to Machu Picchu. After spending some time in this gorgeous area this summer, I'm a firm believer that it deserves at least a day, if not more, on any traveler's Peru itinerary.

Cusco, Peru: A fun, fascinating place all on its own

Most visitors to Cusco, Peru, stop in to see the city on their way to Machu Picchu, often as a place to acclimate to the Andean altitude. But this ancient capital of the Incas, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a fun and interesting city on its own. My family and I recently spent three days there and were sad when it was time to leave. There is so much to do in Cusco and the surrounding area, travelers should be sure to take the time to explore. An additional bonus is that the people there, many of whom are Quechuan, or native Peruvian, are some of the most warm and welcoming I’ve ever encountered. More...
