Highlights from our new Cinque Terre guide

Category: DestinationsMegan Leader @ 06:30

I'm so excited to announce that the long-awaited Cinque Terre destination guide is now live on travel42!

Located on the Italian Riviera, Cinque Terre is a popular day-trip destination for visitors to Florence. The name literally means "five lands," and the area spans the five towns of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. The great thing about these towns is that they're connected by train, but they're also connected by coastal footpaths, so outdoor enthusiasts will love hiking from town to town along the coastline.

Here are some highlights from the new Cinque Terre guide. More...

Discovering holiday magic in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Category: Destinations | Favorites | On The SceneMegan Leader @ 05:22

At this time of year, it seems that everybody has his/her own traditions that draw on deep connections to family, home and heritage. I love the holidays because of all the traditions that coexist so beautifully. Twinkling lights, food and family seem to come to the forefront. Your warmest holiday memories may tie to a candlelight service at your church, a great meal cooked by your grandmother, or cocktails and sequins with some of your best friends. The holidays always remind me of why I love to travel: Everyone has a unique story.

When I needed a dose of holiday joy this year, I turned to my current hometown, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and it surprised me with its cozy, comforting, delightful magic. From stunning architecture dotted with winter greenery to Christmas carols sung by candlelight, this city is full of experiences that will make you feel right at home, no matter where you're from.

Warm up this winter on a distillery tour

Category: Destinations | SightseeingMegan Leader @ 03:38

Now that the leaves have fallen, the air is chilly and Christmas lights are starting to pop up everywhere, we have to face the cold reality that winter will soon be upon us.

But here's the silver lining: We've entered the coziest, booziest time of year! And what better way to show winter who's boss than by warming up with some southern spirits on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail on what may just be the most epic of road trips?

We've created a customized guide for a distillery tour throughout Tennessee and Kentucky. Here are some of the highlights!

Our Top 10 favorite things about Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort

Category: Karen @ 04:54

I recently had the pleasure of spending three nights at the all-inclusive resort complex Bahia Principe Riviera Maya. It is located about 40 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, just beyond the town of Akumal on a lovely stretch of white-sand beach. The water is rocky – not so great for serious swimmers – but for those, like me, whose primary beach-going activities involve walking in the surf and sprawling out on a lounge chair with a good book, it's a pretty ideal setting.

A photo tour of Durban's Golden Mile

Category: DestinationsMegan Leader @ 11:05

On a recent trip to Durban, South Africa, I spent my last afternoon in the city exploring the Golden Mile, a strip of sandy beach that stretches along the Indian Ocean. This is one of Durban's top draws, and rightfully so. It's perfect for family picnics, surfing, fishing, dining in open-air restaurants, biking and more. It's glorious year-round, and an afternoon spent exploring the Golden Mile is not to be missed.

Here are some of my favorite photos from my afternoon that transport me right back to that peaceful day. I also have a few recommendations for travelers to make the most of this beautiful destination.

Go in the spring or fall. On a weekday afternoon in autumn, the beach is practically deserted. It's More...

Fair Season

Category: EventsKaren @ 06:00

Ahh, autumn. Colorful foliage, crisp evenings, football, and pumpkin-flavored everything. It's always difficult for me to bid summer goodbye, but once fall actually arrives, it's hard to deny its charms.

Charming boutique-hotels in Salzburg

Category: Destinations | HotelsKaren @ 07:57

Salzburg, Austria, is a city of soaring Alpine scenery and medieval castles, shady beer gardens and plenty of restaurants serving such local specialties as Wiener schnitzel and apple dumplings with cider sauce. Tourist traffic is heavy – this is, after all, the birthplace and home of Mozart and beloved as the setting of The Sound of Music – and it certainly isn't a place for a quiet getaway, especially during the high season.

Salzburg's boutique-hotels, however, provide a little slice of peace in the midst of the bustle. All with less than 70 rooms, these are our choices for traditional, contemporary and luxurious escapes from the city center's crowds.
